Carroll Community College seeks a full-time Executive Director, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

JOB SUMMARY

The Executive Director, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion provides expertise and leadership for assuring Carroll Community College’s commitment to be a diverse, equitable and inclusive environment for students and employeesThis position reports directly to the President of the College to: ensure organizational change and improvement of diversity, equity, and inclusion practices; serve as the College expert on diversity, equity, inclusion; develop and manage initiatives of the College’s Strategic Plan relating to Diversity and Global Citizenship, and other initiatives to enhance faculty, staff, and student cultural competence, understanding of structural inequality. The Executive Director serves on the College’s Senior Leadership Council and attends periodic meetings of the Executive Team as directed by the President. 

A major responsibility of the Executive Director is guiding and collaborating with the President, Provost, Vice Presidents, Chief Communications Officer and College administrators to create infrastructure and strategies that disrupt and prevent oppressive practices and that infuse diversity, equity and inclusion in all areas of the College. The Executive Director works in concert with committees, internal stakeholders, and external constituents to assure just and humane treatment of all people as core values of the College in fulfillment of the institution’s mission.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Advance the College’s mission and initiatives related to diversity, equity, inclusion, and global citizenship by developing and implementing programs, policies, and initiatives as appropriate; and, work with the President to establish and communicate related goals, compliance, and outcomes.
  2. Identify, propose, and implement best practices to prevent oppression and structural inequity and to assure access, equity, diversity across the College.
  3. Develop proposals and recommendations for institutional policy and procedure revisions and work with all areas of the College to assure implementation.
  4. Facilitate and direct the work of the Diversity and Inclusion Committee and work in partnership with College administrators, faculty, support staff and Human resources personnel to:
    1. assure the application of best practices for outreach to underserved and diverse communities for recruitment, retention, and success of underrepresented students,
    2. oversee the development and implementation of workshops for students to enhance cultural competence, intercultural communication, and promote understanding of how background and experience influence perceptions, beliefs and attitudes toward race,ethnicity, socio-economic status, gender identity, sexuality, disability, and other related topics,
    3. consult with faculty on building cultural competency development strategies in the curriculum and to enhance culturally responsive instructional design methods,
    4. oversee the development and offering of diversity, equity, inclusion workshops and provide resources to assist employees in enhancing cultural competence, intercultural communication skills, understanding systemic inequality, and in maximizing employee contributions to enhancing diversity, equity, inclusion, practices at the College
    5. in concert with Human Resources staff and various campus leaders, develop initiatives designed to recruit and retain traditionally underrepresented staff and faculty, and conduct search committee training and participate in new employee onboarding and orientation,
    6. collaborate with the Chief Communications Officer, the Associate Provost for Student Affairs and Marketing, and the Senior Director of Marketing to develop the College’s press and media releases and marketing publications and website/social media assets to effectively communicate and  promote awareness of the programs, goals and initiatives of the College devoted to access, equity  diversity, inclusion, social justice and social impact
    7. prepare an annual plan and an annual report regarding current and future diversity and inclusion initiatives for the President, Board of Trustees, and Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC) and the Maryland State Legislature,
  5. Chair, convene, and/or serve on various College and community committees, task forces, and councils.
  6. Work with Institutional Research in developing and applying metrics for measuring the effectiveness of diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives of the College.
  7. Serve as ombudsperson for students and employees on issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  8. Recommend and develop and implement procedures to address and prevent issues of hate-bias.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK:

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in a related field of study.
  • Eight years’ experience in Higher Education, at least five years’ experience in leading efforts in planning, implementing, and assessing an organization-wide strategy for attainment of diversity, inclusion, and equity goals.
  • Thorough understanding of how inequality in systems can be disrupted, and demonstrated experience applying change strategies to advance institutional diversity, equity, and inclusion goals. 
  • Demonstrated excellence in verbal and written communication skills, including experience in composing official reports.

 Desired Qualifications:

  • Doctorate Degree in a related field of study preferred.
  • Experience facilitating courageous inter-group conversations around race, gender, sexual orientation, differing abilities and other complex social justice issues  
  • Demonstrated ability in planning and conducting workshops, and assessing and developing cultural competence, intercultural communication, and social inequality training programs for students and employees.
  • Teaching experience and/or experience in curriculum development, organizational development, and/or facilitating change.  
  • Experience in planning, implementing, and assessing and organization-wide strategy for attainment of diversity, inclusion, and equity goals.
  • Experience developing evidence-based tasks and assessment metrics for strategic plan initiatives.
  • Ability to use innovative problem-solving skills that address complex issues related to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Knowledge of human resource practices, procedures, and laws that relate to equal employment opportunity.
  • Knowledge of adult learning principles and ability to provide creative experiential training for adults.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to engage in multiple tasks at the same time
  • Ability to forge strategic alliances within the College and in the community to further the institution’s diversity goals and objectives.
  • Experience in mediation and conflict resolution.
  • Ability to use varying styles, approaches and techniques that reflect an understanding and valuing of human diversity in the workplace.
  • Proficiency in Spanish or other world language(s) preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The work is normally sedentary work which requires exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.  Additionally, the following physical abilities are required: 

  • Hear/talk/communicate – Must be able to exchange information and communicate
  • Visual Acuity/ability to perceive or detect surroundings
  • Mental acuity – Able to focus, concentrate, understand and convey subject matter
  • Repetitive motion (i.e. keyboarding)
  • Stand/sit/walk/able to move or traverse from one area to another

WORK ENVIRONMENT:     

College campus, direct contact with students, staff, faculty and the general public in classrooms, common areas, offices, and campus environments.  Use of safe workplace practices with office equipment; computers for data entry and word processing; avoidance of trips and falls; observance of fire and building safety regulations; and observance of traffic laws when/if driving a College vehicle.
