Assistant Athletic Trainer/Student Success Coach

The Assistant Athletic Trainer/Student Success Coach assists the Head Athletic Trainer with the day-to-day management of the Sports Medicine Department, which includes, but is not limited to the health, safety and wellness of all student-athletes. The Assistant Athletic Trainer/Student Success Coach assists the Athletic Director with academic advising of student-athletes to ensure compliance with NJCAA academic requirements. The Assistant Athletic Trainer/Student Success Coach guides student-athletes concerning their academic plans and progress, academic schedule, choice of major, and other academic activities and career goals, to assist the student in making decisions concerning personal educational goals leading to graduation. 

The following are the functions essential to performing this job:

  • Assess injuries, administer treatment and provide rehabilitation programs for athletes.
  • Instruct athletes on injury prevention.
  • Provide medical coverage of athletic games and practices.
  • Maintain and monitor records related to injuries of athletes.
  • Initiate student-athlete mental health programs and awareness.
  • Work with coaches to implement off season conditioning programs.
  • Communicate with physicians and other members of the medical profession as necessary.
  • Act as liaison to between student athlete, parents, doctors, coaches and athletic     department.
  • Adhere to all Chesapeake College, Region 20, Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference and National Junior College Athletic Association rules and regulations.
  • Advise students about content and structure of postsecondary programs including graduation and/or transfer requirements for a particular program of study.
  • Audit, monitor, and evaluate individual student academic progress.
  • Interpret testing results relevant to placement decisions.
  • Counsel student-athletes.
  • Assist with game management.
  • Serve as a liaison between athletics and other campus support services to ensure student success and compliance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


  1. Bachelor’s Degree in Athletic Training or related field
  2. Certification by the Board of Certification for the Athletic Trainer
  3. Maryland Athletic Training license or eligible for Maryland licensure
  4. Emergency Cardiac Care Certification
  5. Minimum of 2 years experience as a certified Athletic Trainer
  6. Ability to pass background check



  1. Master’s degree in Athletic Training or related field
  2. Athletic Training experience in the collegiate setting
  3. Strong management and organizational skills
  4. Experience in academic advising
  5. Passionate about student-athlete mental health awareness and advocacy
  6. Knowledge about NJCAA student-athlete academic requirements 
  • Receive instructions through various communication media accurately and quickly.
  • Convey answers or instructions to other workers accurately and quickly.
  • Lift and move up to a maximum of 50 pounds.
  • Be exposed to inside and outside environmental conditions.
  • Be subject to dust, noise, fumes and odors.
  • Participate in physical activity that includes, but is not limited to: climbing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, pulling, lifting, grasping, twisting, sitting and feeling.
