Description
This position is responsible for the coordination of courses in the CDL- Commercial Driver’s License Program at Chesapeake College. The Program Coordinator is responsible for curriculum identification, instructor evaluation and professional development, supervising instructors, keeping abreast of laws and regulations in the commercial trucking industry, student recruitment, advising and monitoring of student outcomes. Monitoring the program budget, equipment maintenance, servicing and replacement, maintaining accurate documentation on student's attendance and test scores, proactively managing the maintenance services of all vehicles, and other tasks as identified by the supervisor. The CDL Coordinator will work within the guidelines of the program to facilitate student success at all levels of instruction, including passing the Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Examination. The Coordinator is responsible for the general management of classroom, range and over-the-road instruction. This position reports to a Director of Non-Credit Workforce Training, as designated by the Dean for Workforce Programs.
Examples of Duties
- Develop and improve curriculum based on industry standards, oversee the selection of class materials and textbooks. Schedules open enrollment and contract CDL courses (i.e., CDL A and B, HAZMAT, Tanker etc.). Schedules instructors and course locations. Instructs theory, range, and public road skills, other CDL related courses as necessary. Ensures program quality and compliance with federal, state and local regulations.
- Supervises the CDL instructors; recruits, hires and evaluates instructors for open enrollment and contract training; and assists instructors with implementation of the curriculum.
- Collaborates across college departments to ensure smooth processes for registration, budget, recruitment, etc.
- Works with the Director to develop and manage separate CDL budget, prepares required reports to ensure compliance, and oversees the maintenance and procurement of instructional equipment and supplies, including appropriate vehicles.
- Advises students about course offerings and career pathways and champions student success strategies to improve retention and program completion.
- Assists the Director with the management and leadership of CDL programs as part of the Non-Credit Workforce Training Department, helping to ensure that staffing and workload allocation are appropriate, the work environment is positive and productive, and operations evolve through a process of continuous improvement. Oversee and conduct performance appraisals. Consult with supervisor about unusual or major activities.
- Creates/maintains relationships and partnerships with regional employers and uses employer input, enrollment patterns, cost/benefit information, employment statistics and other data to identify new training opportunities.
- Verifies rosters, grades, attendance and other requirements at the conclusion of the courses and determines successful completion of courses
- Prepares and distributes promotional materials, and participates in trade shows, career fairs and other marketing events.
- Contributes CDL program content to the Non-Credit Workforce Training Department’s annual and five?year comprehensive program review and assessment processes as requested by the Skilled Trades Director.
- Maintain accurate documentation on student's attendance and test scores, and ensure these records are regularly reviewed and updated to support student success and compliance.
- Proactively manage the maintenance services of all vehicles, including scheduling regular maintenance, ensuring compliance with safety standards, and coordinating repairs as needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution preferred.
- CDL License preferred; must be willing to earn CDL within 3 years
- 10 years’ experience as a CDL Driver may be substituted for degree requirement.
- Must have a High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Experience teaching or training adults preferred
- Experience in vehicle maintenance or fleet management preferred.
- Bilingual Spanish desired.

- Ability to perform moderately heavy physical labor.
- Must be able to perform minor vehicle maintenance tasks and inspections.
