Your role and responsibilities:
We are seeking a DevOps Engineer to work in both on-premises and cloud computing environments to maintain STScI’s position as a world leader in the development of software for astronomy and providing high quality, science ready data. You will help build development assets upfront for missions geared towards operating in a DevOps mode for smoother, faster, and more reliable development and deployment of software deliverables.
You will join a team of operations staff, software developers, and astronomers to take the software, hardware, and tools being developed in DMD and make them available to our Science
Operations staff.
Experience, Skills and Qualifications:
Your proficiency with one or more of the following is desired:
Developing and supporting CI/CD pipelines with zero downtime deployments (Ansible, Jenkins)
Version control experience with in git, including branching, tagging and release management
Experience with software build/packaging/publishing tools such as PyPi, Gradle, Maven, CMake, etc.
Comfortable multi-tasking supporting developers and/or operations staff on an interrupt basis, as well as focusing on building software tools to reduce toil.
Deep OS level knowledge/experience/interest, particularly in Linux.
Experience in using containerization technologies. Docker experience preferred.
Desire to automate all manual processes.
Programming experience in Python, Java, and Linux shell scripts.
Experience developing/deploying active and passive monitoring of all critical services.
The ideal candidate is passionate about automation, traceability, and working/solving critical issues hitting production services; is comfortable analyzing a set of call stacks, a core dump, or a tcpdump trace.
Bachelor’s degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or the equivalent technical degree and a minimum of 4 years of experience. A strong software development background is
more important than a background in astronomy or data analysis.
