STScI is looking for a Manager to provide leadership, supervision, technical direction, and mentorship to the Observation Planning Branch (OPB). SCOPE is responsible for the products and services needed to create, plan, and schedule the astronomical observations that are executed on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), and the future James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST).

Description:
The Observation Planning Branch prepares the science, engineering, and calibration programs for long range planning and short-term scheduling on the observatories. This team interacts with and provides customer support to the international science community to help them develop their astronomical science observations. You will lead a team that is passionate about the work they do in support of astronomers around the world with the goal of expanding humanity’s exploration of the Universe.
Roles & Responsibilities
Manage a team of 13 operations staff
Provide project management including coordination, detail planning, and direction
Provide functional management including recruitment, mentoring, and training
Establish goals and track expected results to closure
Develop, maintain and support continuous improvement activities
Coordinate with other groups both within and outside STScI
Qualifications & Job Requirements:
You have a BS/BA in Engineering, Computer Science, Astronomy, Physics, or a related scientific or technical field.
5+ years of progressive technical/operational management and leadership experience including team leadership
Demonstrated experience with user support
Demonstrated very effective communication skills
Demonstrated experience managing staff developing and supporting a large complex system
Demonstrated project management experience
Experience working within an environment that supports a science community.
-Astronomy is a plus but not required
Knowledge of Astronomy is a plus but not required
US citizen or Permanent Resident to meet ITAR requirements
