Location: Baltimore, MD Salary (DOE): $66,741.00 to 113,460.00
The Office of Public Outreach (OPO) is seeking a Science Visuals Developer responsible for producing outreach images, informational graphics and other visuals derived from astronomical or simulated data. Work requires general collaborations with astronomers as well as organizations such as NASA, STScI, and others. You will support scientists working on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) missions. Your visuals will support public engagement by serving as the centerpiece of HST and JWST press releases and various education and public outreach products for print, online and social networking.
You will be successful if you possess: A basic understanding of scientific principles with data and to assure scientific accuracy. Knowledge of astronomical data analysis techniques and software (IRAF/PyRAF e.g.) to process data. A background in photography and visual arts to craft visuals that are understandable to the general public, while maintaining technical accuracy and pleasing aesthetic qualities. Fluent knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite/Cloud and digital photography techniques. Experience designing exhibit materials and other collateral to support conferences and various events.
You can be engaged by participating in presentations, demonstrations, interviews, online chats, etc., to explain to various audiences the processes and methodologies of crafting astronomy images.
Bring your astronomical knowledge to the role:
Experience should embody an emphasis on observing and imaging, principally optical and infrared, but familiarity with other regimes is useful.
Data processing: working knowledge of astronomical image reduction and analysis
Image processing: understanding of how to produce color presentation images from astronomical data
Data analysis techniques: use results derived from astronomical observations (spectra, plots, images, etc.) to supplement imaging
Photography: apply principles of photography to the production of presentation images from astronomy data
Leverage technology to be creative:
Design: apply principles of design to information graphics and other supplemental works of design
Image and graphics editing: Adobe Creative Suite/Cloud (Photoshop, Bridge, Lightroom, Illustrator, etc.), image formats, resolution, color management, metadata
Science data reduction and analysis: IRAF/PyRAF, Python, IDL, etc. science data formats; searching and retrieving archive data (MAST)
Office productivity: word processing, spreadsheet, presentation (MS Office, Keynote), collaboration (WebEx, Basecamp, etc.), cloud sharing (Box)
At least some working familiarity with these topics useful:
o Motion graphics
o Video production
o Web development
