The Space Telescope Science Institute is the science operations center for the Hubble Space Telescope and the science and mission operations center for the James Webb Space Telescope. The Office of Public Outreach creates products and services that are the backbone of the news, education, and public outreach efforts for the missions. The achievements of the office helped to make the Hubble Space Telescope one of the most universally recognized scientific endeavors.
The creative and innovative Office of Public Outreach is seeking a mid-level web developer with full stack web development experience who is looking to expand their career as a member of our website development team. This team develops Institute websites, including the STScI organizational website, individual mission and project outreach sites, as well as wide range of other web-based products. Projects involve development within a team environment then coordinates with outreach and technical staff, including external vendors. The main responsibility of the person filling this position will be to build website functionalities using front and back-end code based on design documents, and system and customer requirements. Most work will happen within our
Java-based Jahia content management system, but other projects may include work with Ruby on Rails, React, and a variety of other tools.
Requirements:
• You possess a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent of education and experience. Degree in computer science, information systems, web development, or a related field preferred. Master’s degree desirable. • You are a stickler for detail and can effectively multi-task, with a natural desire to tackle and resolve problems. • You demonstrate a high level of reliability and focus, and possess an inherent interest in front-end programming. • You should possess strong time management skills and effectively meet multiple deadlines for budgeted work within scheduled time frames. • You possess superb communication skills and are able to work well with project teams (designers, writers, curators), as well as talk to internal clients as needed. • You have at least 3 years of continuous industry experience in Web production and should be able to demonstrate current capabilities that are comparable to our existing standards. • You also have a minimum of 1 year of developing within content management systems (Jahia, Sitecore, etc.) In addition to the requirements listed above, you should be passionate and work to remain engaged with industry trends, be self-managed, and enjoy working in a collaborative and stimulating environment to think through process and working methods.
Responsibilities include:
• Provide significant technical and functional development for STScI organizational and mission-based websites
• Collaborate across divisions with internal teams, project managers, developers, and curators to understand requirements and successfully provide website functionality and appearance • Valid HTML/CSS Template creation • Maintenance of existing sites—this may include creation of new display templates, development of new features, or bugs fixes • Create and debug front-end code • Follow a thorough QA process that ensures logging of issues within a JIRA ticketing system • Stay on top of current front-end standard methodologies You have a proven background in: • HTML 5 • CSS • JavaScript • Web Standards based template creation • Cross-browser compatibility and testing • Writing well-designed, testable, efficient code that is maintainable and well-documented. Familiarity with the following is strongly encouraged: • Java / Java Server Pages (JSP) / Groovy / Spring • Agile Methodologies and pair-programming • Git/Version Control Experience • JIRA / Confluence • Jahia Digital Experience Manager (or other CMS products) • Ruby on Rails • React • PHP • CSS Preprocessors (Sass, Less, etc.) • Gulp, Webpack, Grunt, or other front-end build tools • Ability to write and work with existing JavaScript • Front-end code debugging tools like Chrome Dev Tools • Search Engine Optimization Techniques • Accessibility concepts and regulations such as WCAG and Section 508 / ADA Compliance • Mobile and responsive Web design • CMS template integration • Usability and Information Architecture standard methodologies • Adobe Photoshop
