Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
To assist and support the Dairy Program Manager in the management of all aspects of the daily activities and animal research conducted at the Clarksville facility. To provide animal care and handling expertise and assistance in all areas of daily operations. To assist in training student/hourly workers in the animal care and milking operation. In the absence of the program manager, provides direct supervision, work schedules, job assignments and makes decisions on animal health and care.
Minimum Qualifications:
High School Diploma or GED


Six years progressively responsible experience in agriculture work, four years of which must have been in laboratory or field research and two years of which must have been in a lead or supervisory capacity.

Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience. OTHER: Valid Maryland Noncommercial Class C or equivalent driver’s license.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    • Comprehensive knowledge of farming practices and equipment usage. 
    • Comprehensive knowledge of and skill in scientific methods and the use of related laboratory equipment. 
    • Comprehensive knowledge of and skill in the use of related farm equipment. 
    • Thorough knowledge of mathematics including algebra, area, volume, weights, measures, and proportions and ability to perform mathematical and algebraic calculations. 
    • Ability to use computers; to supervise and train agricultural technicians and support staff; to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; to lift and transport agricultural supplies, tools, and equipment, to climb, and to perform extensive standing and walking; to wear and work in personal protective equipment; to work in extreme weather conditions.


This position requires an incumbent to possess and maintain a valid Maryland Noncommercial Class C or equivalent driver’s license.
  • Four (4) years of experience working with Dairy Cattle.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of farming practices and equipment operation & maintenance. 
  • The ability to be a team player with critical thinking and problem solving skills. 
  • Ability to collect and record research data, use computers; supervise and train agricultural technicians and support staff; to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; milking parlor operation and milking of cows.
Additional Certifications:
Artificial Insemination Training/Experience or the ability to obtain Artificial Insemination Certificate within the first six months of employment.

Physical Demands
Harsh work environment, excessive heat, cold, dirt, noise. Must be able to tolerate strenuous physical activity (e.g., lifting, shoveling, carrying heavy items) that may have to be completed in adverse weather conditions. Animal Care requires weekend and holiday shifts as well as overtime as needed.
