Position title: Backup and Recovery IT Engineer

As a member of the Division of Information Technology, the IT Engineer will use modern IT development frameworks to provide backup, archive and storage services for the University of Maryland. The IT Engineer’s role will be to evaluate, propose and implement technical solutions for primary, backup and archive workflows for software developers, database administrators, platform administrators and other constituents at the university.
The IT Engineer will help maintain and improve existing workflows and work towards modernizing backup, archive and storage services that help integrate or utilize multi-cloud environments, such as AWS, Azure and Vmware on-premise clouds. As such, this position must be able to use tools and applications that complement several different storage and backup platforms and is adept at learning and utilizing new devops technologies for IT service deployment and management.
The IT Engineer will also ensure that proper metrics and analytical data is developed to support decision-making activities. The IT Engineer will also ensure that workflows implement and enforce proper data management and access policies as dictated by UMD IT security policies. The IT Engineer will be able to provide consultations for a variety of constituents to help address data storage and data protection architectures.

Minimum qualifications
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Information Systems or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
Experience
● Backup and archiving application experience with Veeam or IBM Spectrum Protect or other similar classes of data protection software
● Advanced experience with Linux administration, Vmware and AWS administration, as well as some Windows administration exposure is critical to this position.
● Experience in with platform agnostic tools such as Git, JSON, Javascript and REST API scripting.
● 10 years experience in supporting data protection and archiving workflows and pipelines for other medium to large organizations.
● Advanced experience configuring and troubleshooting networks gear and protocols, including firewall, routing and DNS.
● Experience with identity management utilities such as Active Directory and OpenLDAP.
● Experience implementing other backup and archiving services.

● Experience supporting diverse vendor technologies.
● Ability to multitask.
● Can lead projects, work independently and mentor junior staff.

Additional information: this position does not provide sponsorship for visas.
Physical demands: predominantly operates in an office environment. Must be able to occasionally go to the physical data center(s) to manage hardware installations, decommissioning, administration and troubleshooting. Some work (less than 5%) requires moving and lifting of data center equipment. Must have the ability to walk short distances. Available to work on weekends and holidays when necessary.
