The University of Maryland’s Network Operations Group is responsible for maintaining the operational status of the University’s network and operates 24×7, 365 days a year. This position is responsible for managing the team maintaining all network devices, including both the wired and wireless networks. Maintenance includes resolving hardware issues, upgrading code as necessary, diagnosing and resolving network performance issues. This position also provides advanced technical consultation and guidance for Network Operations, DIT, and the University.
The position will also manage the planning, coordinating, and implementing of network infrastructure changes. The Network Operations team promotes cohesiveness and team work and this position will require the ability to promote team work and unity. There will be times where independent work is necessary as well. Project management skills are also a requirement. The manager will be expected to be the project lead for group projects. This includes meeting with the stakeholders, gathering requirements, pulling in resources within the team and outside in order to coordinate the work, and overseeing the implementation of the project. Documentation is a critical tool for Network Operations. This position will manage the maintenance of network infrastructure documents and diagrams to update as needed.
This position requires an understanding of network security and may require the development and deployment of network security services.
This position requires the mentoring of junior Network Operations staff and serves as an escalation resource.
Other duties as assigned, including managing network resources such as installed fiber, and enhancing network infrastructure monitoring.
Minimum qualifications
EDUCATION (include licenses, certifications, etc.):
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
EXPERIENCE:
7 years’ experience providing support to network operations either as a network engineer or technical team lead, including 2 years’ experience as a team lead or supervisor in enterprise data networks.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
-Ability to demonstrate a strong knowledge of and support for a predominantly Cisco environment, a working knowledge of network testing equipment, and familiarity with wiring, including fiber optics.
-Knowledge of the various transports such as Gigabit Ethernet, TLS, and DWDM services.
-Familiarity with wireless (802.11) authentication, security and IOS, Cisco IOS software and Catalyst OS interfaces, Windows OS, Mac OS and user level familiarity with Unix OS.
-Experience with providing coverage for a network support environment, troubleshooting, administration systems including trouble ticketing system (ServiceNow), network management system (Spectrum), and work order system (Pinnacle).
-Experience with electrical power and with supporting a large wireless system.
-Willingness to work different shifts between the hours of 7am and 10pm with future coverage increasing to 24/7.
-Ability to communicate effectively, including good written and oral communication skills and good interpersonal skills, is required.
-Must have ability to perform and manage complex and time-critical tasks with optimum effectiveness and efficiency, often in high-pressure situations.
-A valid state driver’s license is required.
Preferences:
Bachelor degree in an IT related field.
Ability to demonstrate a strong knowledge of and support for a predominantly Cisco environment, a working knowledge of network testing equipment, and familiarity with campus wiring, including fiber optics.
Willing to work different shifts in a 24 × 7 environment and be available after hours for on-call support.
Knowledge of the various transports such as Gigabit Ethernet, TLS, and DWDM services.
Knowledge and experience with security appliances and firewalls (Cisco ASA and Palo Alto).
Familiarity with wireless (802.11) authentication, security and IOS, Cisco IOS software and Catalyst OS interfaces, Windows OS, Mac OS and user level familiarity with Unix OS.
Experience with providing coverage for a network support environment, troubleshooting, administration systems including trouble ticketing system (ServiceNow), network management system (Spectrum), and work order system (Pinnacle).
Experience with electrical power and with supporting a large wireless campus network.
Additional certifications: Network certification preferred, but not required.
