University Advancement has an outstanding opportunity for an Assistant Director for Advancement Marketing and Communications.
The Assistant Director for Advancement Communications oversees and manages internal and external strategic marketing and communications programs and projects that will increase awareness of and private support for the University of Washington. This position assists in developing, supporting, implementing and evaluating marketing initiatives in support of the University’s integrated brand strategy—specifically in support of the university’s goal to grow private support. Given the University’s centralized/decentralized structure, work will be done in collaboration with colleagues throughout the University Advancement organization.
Reporting to the Director for Advancement Marketing and Communications Strategy as a key member of the University Marketing & Communications (UMAC) strategy team, the Assistant Director supports brand development and campaign priorities and works with fundraising and communications teams throughout University Advancement to engage audiences digitally; develop editorial content; identify targeted opportunities to cultivate pride and motivate investments in the UW. To execute this work, this position will frequently collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, including University Advancement staff, donors and volunteers. This position also drives efforts to ensure broad awareness/use of available advancement information and brand tools/resources for comprehensive fundraising campaigns.
Duties and Responsibilities
Strategy Management & Implementation
Develop and maintain targeted communications plans for Advancement. Establish new advancement strategies, such as specific marketing campaigns and project-based marketing projects, to support the objectives of the UW’s fundraising campaign and engagement strategy.
Plan, develop, and manage the digital engagement for Advancement communications, including the campaign website, e-newsletters, reports, and other electronic and digital communications. Analyze the results, making recommendations for increased effectiveness.
Manage internal Advancement communications, including newsletters, operational announcements, and executive communications.
Collaborate and support strategies of central fundraising and stewardship teams that increase the effectiveness of their advancement work. Initiate and lead cross-disciplinary efforts with colleagues from central Advancement units, like Corporate & Foundation Relations, Donor Services, Planned Giving, Principal Giving and Regional Advancement (including International Giving).
Collaborate with the Director and campus partners to develop and manage a communications and public relations plans for the fundraising and institutional priorities of the university. Shape messages for key audiences, and support and implement the integrated communications plans to achieve the university’s goals.
Create comprehensive project plans to oversee work from inception to delivery.
Lead teams, within marketing and across the university, to achieve objectives.
Write, edit and evaluate fundraising and other marketing materials, both digital and traditional, work with content specialists, designers, fundraisers, and event planners to develop both small and large programs to engage supporters.
Program Management
Advantage appropriate central partner communication vehicles and tools to serve the needs of constituency (school/college/campus) partners.
Collaborate with campus partners to develop and write stories, both internal and external communications, which build strong connections with our donors, alumni and community to continue to build support for the university.
Stay current with and introduce new marketing tactics when and where they can add value, such as viral marketing, new media, etc.
Analyze the results of identified marketing communication efforts, making recommendations for increased effectiveness. Oversee qualitative and quantitative research projects required to develop communications plans for campaigns.
Develop presentations for use by senior university administration to launch new university-wide development related programs and initiatives.
Other Duties
Participate on task forces, committees and other forums that address the role of communications in the advancement program.

Requirements
Bachelor's degree in English, journalism, marketing, advertising, communications or related field and three or more years of diverse experience in marketing/communications or related field. Equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills have been acquired may substitute for degree.
Successful experience using all major forms of marketing communication vehicles: advertising, electronic new media, web, email, direct mail, events, collateral, etc.; successful experience implementing qualitative and quantitative research projects.
Demonstrated ability to conceive, implement, and evaluate strategies.
Knowledge and experience of fundraising principals, marketing principals and industry trends. Demonstrated ability to synthesize information to balance the interests of multiple parties and act in a decisive and timely manner. The ability to work with various constituents including the academic community and prominent volunteers to define and articulate the University’s image and priorities. Skill in analyzing and synthesizing large and complex amounts of information, identifying patterns and formulating logical and objective conclusions.
Ability to perform tasks using Apple and IBM compatible personal computers. Demonstrated strong computer software knowledge, including proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and Adobe Acrobat, as well as Internet familiarity. Experience with the Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop) a plus.

Desired Qualifications
Experience in advancement/fundraising communications in general and within higher education specifically.
Communication experience to internal audiences within a large organization.
Public and non-profit experience.
Experience using Marketo or other digital marketing software a plus.
Conditions of Employment
Cubicle/Open workspace environment, which may result in additional or higher levels of noise and visual distractions.
This position requires a flexible schedule as the workload and times vary considerably.
