At Vanderheyden, our caring and professional staff works hard to provide individuals with the skills necessary to enhance self-esteem and self-confidence, and to engage in experiences that lead to personal growth and to live healthy and productive lives. Our vision is to continue the work of providing life-changing care to the youth, individuals and families we serve for another 185 years.
Vanderheyden’s roots began in the winter of 1800 as the Benevolent Society of Troy to Assist Indigent Women and Children. In 1833 the Society opened the Troy Orphan Asylum, which was soon incorporated by the State of New York.
In 1942, the name was changed to Vanderheyden, reflecting the high ideals of the Van Der Heyden family, founders of Troy. For generations, this family demonstrated faith in the growth and success of Troy, the same faith we have for the growth and success of youth in our care.
Although our programs have changed over the past 180+ years, the needs of the youth, individuals and families remain constant: to feel safe, to receive comfort and to grow and thrive.
